The Development of Pellet Plant in South Korea

In early times, South Korea mainly imported pellets from Vietnam. In the middle of 2013, the import volume had reached 50000 tons each month. In 2014, the import volume had grown monthly and reached nearly 2000000 tons by the end of the year, which received full attention by wood pellet manufactures around the world. Meanwhile, South Korea is also committed to develop domestic pellet to provide heating fuel for rural households with the goal of reaching 1 million tons in 2020.

 

South Korea has more than 6300000 hectares of forest area, nearly 64% of the land area. The government agencies of South Korean are extremely concerned about the development of using forest biomass as alternative fuels.

In 2010, Korea Forest Service (KFS) plans to provide wood pellet boilers for 16% of 900 000 rural households who uses heating oil. Also plans to stimulate domestic production of wood pellets and complete the goal of 100 million tons of wood pellet in 2020. Yeoju Central Wood Distribution Centre, located in Gyeonggi of Yeoju County, is the one of the initiative groups.

 

The center is subordinate to the national forestry cooperation alliance and founded in 1997, by processing wood to promote economic forest management, especially for the treatment of small diameter logs.

 

The sawmill could process about 20 million cubic meters of timber every year through the use of commercial cork, such as Larix kaemferi, Pinus koraiensis and Chamecyparis botusa. The main products are decorative, construction wood and glulam beams. In 2008, the center was built adjacent to the sawmill, using sawdust and shavings of the pellet plant, which was officially put into operation in January 2009 and has been operating up to now.

 

The factory covers an area of only 395 square meters with three floors of vertical production lines. There are two pellet mills in the top with the output of two tons per hour and a ton per hour respectively. Cooling device is located on the second floor, while automatic bagging and stack system is on the first floor. The entire production system is controlled and monitored by the central control room. Under normal operating conditions, only two employees are required for daily production and maintenance.
