Generally speaking, a large number of wood pellet mill clients prefer raw material like sawdust and wood chips because their material may have been crushed or those are the only material they can get. However, wood chips have been pretreated as well before put into pelletizer machine, namely, the wood pellet mill. There is still one thing worthy of being mentioned. Even for wood chip mill before pelleting, wood chips, with different sizes, shall be crushed into uniform and even size. Some wood chips may be with the size of 2cm*2cm or 3cm*3cm, or others are even bigger. So prior to being pelletized, all the oversized material shall be dwindled into about 3mm or 4mm like powder for being put into the wood chip pellet machine. Because a wood chip pellet machine demands the size of feedstock to be 3mm or 4mm.

 

Sawdust size also differs from one kind to another. But since the demanded size for pellet machine is confirmed. We thus should pretreat material for pelletizing. Besides the size factor, moisture content of sawdust and wood chips should not be ignored, which happen to play an important role in pelletization. And the moisture content remains 13%-15% or so. But due to the different materials, mositure content is a little bit elastic. From time to time, it could hold 19%, though it is a rare thing.

Moisture content of sawdust or wood chip is an important factor which requires controlling strictly during the pellet making process. Water as moisture in the biomass is one of the most useful agents that are employed as a binder and lubricant. Moisture content is a central property for woods physical strength and stiffness. Also the drying process interacts on the situation of moisture. Studies have showed strength and durability of the dandified products increased with increasing moisture content until an optimum is reached.
